Unfortunately for the blog I am tied up this entire week with Microsoft related events and unable to produce a video. Maybe somewhere down the line I will be able to push out two in a week to make up for this week’s loss but no promises on that one heheh.

Of note to those of you who might be in LA area, on September 1st I will be conducting a demonstration of the Expression suite of products for the local IXDA chapter here. You can find all the information for the event at http://ixdala.ning.com/ I hope you will all try to make it out, I am looking forward to the event.

Cheers,

Today I flipped the switch on a section of the site that I’ve wanted to have for a while. It’s not exactly as I pictured I would do it, since this is really just a feed from the Expression community’s excellent content. I had thought I would do something like this myself with my own content. But producing a video once a week along with everything else made this little feature something I didn’t have much time for. I may expand on one of these tips every once in a while if I feel I have something to offer, but they are really a great collection of information and not just on Blend and Silverlight but really for all of the Expression products.

There are some talented and experienced folks working hard on the Expression community, they have put together a great site to help learn the products there and if I can draw any more attention to that then awesome.

The Expression Community

Best,

I feel like she’s not as ugly anymore either.

Now that I am settled in the new place I have had some time to give the old girl some spit and polish. I’ve also had some time to really think about what I want to add and I have begun to lay out a course. I am setting some ambitious goals for myself hopefully they just seem ambitious by comparison to the last few months of absolutely nothing and what happens is it turns out to be cake to give you guys one webcast a week.

Yeah thats right one a week, and that’s just part of it. I won’t go too far into details because I’ll probably catch enough hell if I start missing on that goal. But that’s what I needed and that’s what I have, a goal. So there it is. A new look, and a new…, err well a return to the original mission, but this time with new and improved vigor! Heh, now don’t get crazy on me or anything cause here is the punch line, and this is going to make you chuckle. I have to go to Atlanta for a week, next week in fact, so the fun starts really happening the week after next. Let’s not think of this as me already dropping the ball, lets look at this as me not picking it up completely until the week after. I’ll have the ball, I’ll kick it around with me while I’m in Atlanta, put I’ll wait till I get back to actually, you know, pick it up.

Enough of that, something that you might be interested in if you happen to be in the Los Angeles area here on the 28th of July. I, being Microsoft, will be hosting the locale for what looks to be an exciting LA UX Meetup event. Jared Spool will be delivering a talk on “What makes a design intuitive”. The event will be at Microsoft’s downtown LA office and all the info you may need is available at the LA UX Meetup website — Right Here.

There is also a special IXDA event near the end of August slash beginning of September where I will be demoing live in person the great new versions of tools in the Expression Studio suite, so keep an eye out here for more information about that here in the near future. Well that makes for nice little late night update, now I need to see a bed about a pillow.

Good Night.

J.

I just wanted to make note of a few things about the website. First it is, as you may have noticed, brand spanky new. There are links that do not currently link anywhere and not much in the way of content. There are a couple of reasons for this outside the obvious new website smell. It is my hope that the site will evolve into a repository for a wealth of knowledge on Silverlight and Expression Studio as much as I myself will evolve into someone who actually knows something about them as well. This is the push kicking and screaming into this new challenge for me and I think having buttons that stand out on the page screaming for content to point to should be a decent motivator to flush out the site and my knowledge. That combined with the assault of you the visitor berating me over the “broken” links and lack of content should have the site all dolled up before you know it.

As far as what is missing, well I wouldn’t go around saying what’s in the nav now is set in stone, and they may not be all that readable right now, I plan on “turning them on” once I have content behind them like Articles is now so they won’t stay greyed out. I am in no position to offer anything of substance on producing Silverlight sites as of yet so the Tutorial section I am dreaming about will probably be the slowest of all the base nav links to light up. Things like the About page shouldn’t take very long here I have already two posts that are chock full of the content that page wants, there are several events occurring in the first three months of `09 that it should be long before I have some good stuff there. The News section will probably jump up there as soon as I see something of note, now that the site is live, hey that might even be enough to get the page going, nothing like redundancy to start off the morning. Reference is a place I envision having information on books and sites about Silverlight, and my impression of how helpful they were to my own ramp up on the technology.

So there is the ambition for Silverlight | Switch, but one of the key things that is missing right now is you. I hope you will all contribute as much as you can, give me the nudge I need to flush out the content, correct me when I misstep, add to the conversation, educate me as much as I hope one day this site will educate others on this really cool technology.

Thanks for visiting, I look forward to sharing more with you soon.

Oh, one other thing this site is missing is an editor. I, though having been born and raised in these United States, consider myself an excellent candidate for a ESL student, specifically as it relates to grammar and writing. Please don’t expect me to put commas and semi-colons and periods in the right place. The computer does a good job at keeping the spelling mistakes to a minimum but I am pretty good at being so bad that even that might not be enough to thwart my efforts. So there is your “don’t try and learn the art of writing from me” disclaimer. I’ll keep my fingers crossed that it doesn’t impact the content too much.

Thanks,
J.
